Papole Khaki

22/09/2023

Papole Khaki is a trombonist and songwriter from Kurdistan and Kristiansand, with a background from the jazz institute in Stavanger. Her music is created to form a link between her Kurdish and Norwegian identity. Through direct Kurdish and Norwegian texts, she tells stories about her difficult past, and feelings of being an outcast. The music is heavily influenced by her Kurdish upbringing, where she writes simple and catchy melodies that intuitively lean on both Norwegian and Kurdish folk music. With her vulnerable performance on both the trombone and vocally, Papole gives an insight into her dynamic everyday life.

The band was formed through the musician and composer collective "Det Annet Kjønn - Kollektiv", where Papole also is a leader of. The band members are a large part of the distinctive expression in the band of Papole Khaki.

With soft soundscapes on the piano, we have Erlend Johannessen who has previous experience as a classical trombonist, the versatile bassist Adriana Døsvik with a strong background in rhythmic vocals, drummer Kristian Seines with a broad knowledge of genres from free jazz to beat, baritone saxophonist Magnus Kaspersen Evjen with his controlled howls on the horn, and the distinctive beautiful sound of Agnes Viksten on soprano saxophone.
